The PRISM Grant (Promoting Innovation in Science and Mathematics) Using DNA Sequences tools in the classroom exposes high school students with modern molecular biology techniques and procedures used in Environmental Microbiology, Consumer Genomics, Agriculture, Food and Medicine, Genetic Research, and Forensics. Students will learn and use local store purchased fish as a model to understand the fundamental processes that occur during (Polymerase Chain Reaction) cycles. Students will sequence the DNA of store brought fish to determine the genome of common fish sold in grocery stores is actually the fish being purchased by consumers. Students will use Grouper, Red Snapper, Salmon, and Tilapia fish. Students will compare their DNA sequences with known genotypic markers and commercial identifiers published through the US Fish and Wildlife Services.
