The Kenan Fellows Program for Teacher Leadership at NC State empowers K-12 educators through summer internships with industry, high-value professional development and membership into a prestigious network of teacher leaders. Teachers gain the skills and confidence to build mutually-beneficial partnerships with local industries and together work for positive change in North Carolina education. The fellowship is an outstanding example of how industry leaders can connect with teacher leaders to enrich and enliven learning experiences for all students.
Edwin Davis has been chosen and accepted the opportunity to work with you on the project,Cells and More Cells with Dr. Amy Maddox. It is a privilege to collaborate with you this summer and throughout the school year to give this exemplary teacher an opportunity to experience cutting-edge practices and to convey the excitement of this world class lab to students and peers.
The Maddox lab is currently working on cell function and cytoplasmic processes that occur in the germline during mitosis in C. elegans. The Maddox lab is experimenting with cell function, tissue integrity, maintenance of the cell shape and organization. Specifically, several post doctoral students are studying septins in the cytoskeleton in C. elegans. Septin proteins are a conserved family of cytoskeletal GTP-binding proteins that function in cytokinesis, cell polarity, and membrane remodeling in many eukaryotic cell types. Septin proteins are GTP-binding proteins that form filaments and higher-order structures on the cell cortex of eukaryotic cells and associate with actin and microtubule cytoskeletal networks.
